Waterloo Bridge

Waterloo Bridge is a quiet masterclass in how cities reinvent their own river.

The first bridge on this site opened in 1817, designed by Scottish Civil Engineer John Rennie as a granite toll bridge and was renamed to mark the Battle of Waterloo.. it was considered one of the most elegant masonry crossings in Europe.

Structural problems and shifting river conditions eventually caught with it, and in the 1930s rather than repair it was decided to be replaced as a mor capacious modern structure.

The current bridge, by Architect Giles Gilbert Scott, grandson of Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is a reinforced‑concrete structure cladded in Portland stone.

Construction commenced in 1937 and continued during the Second World War with a significant female workforce. This is why we know it as the Ladies’ Bridge.

It was completed in 1945, and it is now a Grade II* listed structure.

If you want to take beautiful photos of London's riverscape, this bridge will give you some of the best long views of the Thames .
