I hope you are having a good Sunday wherever you are. ❤️
Allow me to share another interesting work I came across @tate earlier in the year.
Predecessors 2013 is a two-part work by the Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby. It is an insightful exploration of identity, culture, and the complexities of the legacy, heritage and the constant evolution of one's identity in a globalized world.
The left panel (first photo) showcases a modern living room, juxtaposed with traditional latticework of 1970s Lagos. There, a female figure -the artist- sits representing the Afropolitan (*) spirit : a bridge between multiple geographies and cultures.
(*) A term (popularised by Achille Mbembe ) to define a generation who exists between multiple geographies and cultures, living a trans-cultural and trans-national life.
The right panel (second photo) showcases a collage of memories: a kitchen filled with anachronistic utensils linked to Nigerian history and a mixture of of family photographs and photographs of cultural icons.
The collage-like process used by the artist to depict a world where the focus between past and present intertwine, grabbed my attention and drew me in unlike the other works on display in the same room.
(More anecdotally, so did her shoes which look like they could be the @unitednude fold ☺️ )
