Granby Four Streets

As you probably noticed, architecture is not only my job but my passion. And the built environment, in the way in which it contributes or takes away from people's lives is a constant concern too.

This is why we had been looking forward to visiting the Assemble collective's Turner Prize-winning Granby Four Streets.

In fact, it was at the top of the to-do list when planning our visit to Liverpool (before the world around us changed, back in early March 2020).

The project has been defined as a "ground-up" regeneration project and it is no surprise to see how it has been embraced by its community ... The opposite to "ground-up" (which I guess would be top-down) often results in some form of "space ship landing" where the existing context is ignored to impose a new way of living... Like those aliens in the movies... Or through history.

On arrival to the area, one could feel a NYC's Williamsburg-like vibe if only a much more grounded and less hipster version.

The community-owned winter garden (which together with the adjacent kitchen and large room, is located inside two emptied terraced houses) was a highlight, for sure. It was bright and charming an exciting place to host community gatherings, which is in dramatic contrast to the institutional images people have in mind when picturing a community centre

It is too often that we stop ourselves from dreaming the kind of dreams we should, to create the places we could be.
