Liverpool

I had wanted to visit Liverpool for a long time and ,as I mentioned a few posts back, a year ago (pre COVID) we were able to enjoy a day trip to the city. It was an amazing one and the memories precious ... More so due to the fact that it was one of the three (day) trips we took in the entire year.

From the architectural point of view, there are many things to love in this city. It is clean, beautiful and has a great scale which enables you to walk or cycle everywhere. The streets have great proportions and there are many beautiful and well crafted buildings.

People are lovely and, of course, it is by the water, which in my eyes is a bonus.

I realise the city has changed a lot since my grandfather, the fisherman, used to stop by in the 50s, and even more since the Basque business community established in the city's ship yards of the late 19th century. Never the less, when standing in the pier, in front of the Three Graces, one can't but feel closer to them.

Walter Aubrey Thomas' construction of the iconic structure began in 1908 and it opened in 1911 as the home of Royal Liver Assurance, becoming the first major construction in Britain.

In front of it and designed by Danish architectural studio 3XN, the Museum of Liverpool is one of the more recent additions to the sea front. A very European building , it provides opportunities for interaction through the landscaping that surrounds it, and it feels respectful to its context, despite its clearly modern appearance.

We run out of time to visit it, but linked as the city's history is to the history of my homeland, the Basque Country, I will in the future.

Ps.for anyone wondering why I keep posting images that are a year old ;

At the time the 1st lockdown was imposed in the UK, i had my IG grid ready , but looking at the bigger picture, it felt pointless . 2020 was a tough year and one which made me rethink the use of IG. This is why it took me such a lot of time to return and why my images now come with longer stories about things I care about.
