La Gamba

What does an architect do? This was a question a person waiting for a bus at Kingston station asked me back in 1999. It was a surprising question because, as far as i knew, (and based on the country i came from) everyone knew what an architect does.
Soon enough and through what I can only describe as a cultural shock, I learned that things are very different for the profession in the UK. So much so that by the time I had to title my dissertation I was already wondering "Are architects necessary for society?"
It has been a while and I have learnt that the more relevant question is: "How can architects support their clients?" Last week we attended the Family and Friends event at our latest completed project La gamba London . As the team moved across the space we have help materialise, I confirmed that it is through our role as facilitators, guides and supporters that we do so.
After months working closely with the client ( Applebee's Fish- at Borough Market), we managed to build a space that is warm, welcoming and in line with their ethos and ambition for this new venture .... and it has been a great experience.

And while some of our peers insist on describing projects are "their babies" or getting upset that the owners make design decisions they disagree with, we welcome the opportunity to work with engaged clients that know what they want.

Afterall, the spaces we shape are not "ours" but theirs and their community's.

Having said this, we all love when a plan comes together and to be part of projects such as this one, where our expertise is welcome, recognised and appreciated is truly enjoyable.

In case you wonder, the menu is an honest and delicious selection of Spanish dishes that highlights the produce in the way that Applebee's is known for. I will make a separate post but, of course, should u rather see for yourself, the restaurant is open for bookings.
