Happy Saturday!

Have you found that since restrictions started each day blends in with the next? In our case, this had already started when we began to work directly with end-user clients.

Because most people work during the week and find it difficult to make time to focus on their projects, they tend to do so in the evenings and weekends and as a result, our weekly schedules got turned back to front.

This has some advantages.

One of the top ones is that on Mondays, museums are empty and one can enjoy them without crowds.

It was on one of those random days that we visited Zanele Muholi's at the Tate. An exhibition I would thoroughly recommend. Should you want to visit it, there will be 14 days to do so once museums reopen on May 17

Zanele Muholi is a South African artist with a very insightful body of work.

The exhibition at the Tate (a collaboration of theirs with the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Gropius Bau, and Bildmuseet at Umeå University) was one we wanted to see ever since it was announced and it did not disappoint.

Muholi uses their work to raise awareness about topics affecting minoritised groups in a way that quite captures the hidden beauty and strength behind the individuals she photographs.

Without spoiling it for any of you, this exhibition is a journey in which you will encounter evocative images showcasing everyday moments side by side with portrayals of reality that are often tough and infuriating.

In this post, I am sharing some of the self-portraits from "Somnyama Ngonyama". I love those because as well as being a masterclass in the use of light in portraiture, the artist uses everyday props and the western bias for "cliche" images representing "African cultures" to introduce a series of poignant and politically charged topics. Race, gender roles, or the environment are just a few.
