Travelling across the UK

May 11, 2021 0 comments

Yesterday new announcements re Covid were made.

Among those, the idea of overnight stays (nationally).

There was also some discussions about the often contradictory policies re. Self isolation when travelling internationally... For instance when going to Ireland Vs returning from Ireland. (In one direction you have to but not in the opposite... Can't remember which is which)

Aside from the obvious, it gives me a chance to voice something that I am quite frustrated with, which is the media's persistence in giving updates about holidays abroad just after/before reporting on the economical impact of Covid in the UK

Surely if they highlighted the many brilliant places one can visit in the country, and encouraged people to spend money in the UK instead, they could be benefiting the local economy as well as satisfying the country's need for a break "from it all".

As a foreigner who runs a business in the UK, i am very aware of my impact in the local economy

When I was a child, I travelled extensively across Spain before travelling abroad (worth noting that France didn't count as abroad due to proximity... essentially 3 villages away). I remember my parents telling us about the importance of getting to know the country you are living in and appreciating cultural diversity before venturing to other countries.

At the time I found this persistence puzzling but it taught us about impact, respectful tourism and finding opportunities to learn wherever we were..

This mindset has carried me through life and after all these years, kept me interested in exploring and discovering new places within the UK. Which is why I cannot understand why the focus is not on encouraging people to do the same.

After all, if we are serious about recovery and about facing up to climate change, this is something we need to be building on.

That's it, I said it!

The photos in this post are from @heritagelpool , a brilliant restaurant in Liverpool I want to recommend for your next vacation or staycation (if you rather)
