Supporting the next generation

Yesterday we had the opportunity to share with a Japanese student who reached out to us a few of London's best built environment examples. (Note: don't want to bore anyone here, hence I've selected some photos of places I've not shared previously)

We walked more than 20k and were able to give them an overview of the types of projects professionals get involved with in London. From grade 1 listed buildings to key public realm interventions and everything in between . (We even found time to visit the giraffes and bumped into the wonderful @archimakeorg team who were running a workshop for children with a handful of volunteering architects)

The active involvement of the industry preserving heritage, of the communities shaping of their built environment and of architects in raising awareness with the next generations were a few of the things that seemed to impress the student. And looking at his reaction from the outside made me think...

When you are in the thick of it seeking to build a more inclusive world, and more diverse profession, it is only too easy to see how much more needs to be done and forget to appreciate the efforts made by so many ( including you).. until a new pair of eyes provides you with a much needed perspective.

Today we received a kind email suggesting that following our tour, their view of the profession and architecture has changed and they discovered a new appreciation about aspects of it they did not even know existed. And I am chuffed to know that if we managed to show the potential to one person, that was a Sunday well spent.
