Enough time went by since the Paris Olympics ended to share some thoughts I did not feel like sharing at the time. I don't know what happened this year but it seems to me that many of this year's olympians need to learn to better manage their disappointment and to get the green monster under control because the level of pettiness we have seen in 2024 was off the charts. The footie had already set a precedent for rude and bigoted spectators but the bullying across social media exponentially grew during the Olympics. When I was a child I bought into the Olympic spirit. Then I grew up and realised that the Olympics are not all they seem, however, it felt like we could still rely on Olympians (who understand the effort that goes into getting ready and should be aware that loosing is one of the possible outcomes - given they are working towards avoiding it) to be beaten elegantly. This year however we have seen all sorts of astounding behaviours. From false doping claims to misgendering , people who should have known better have followed the herd and felt no need to apologise after the debunking of each of their claims. It has not only been sad for sports, It has taken the attention away from the winners' achievements. Remember when France announced these were to be the most diverse games ever ? What happend? In front of our eyes, the Olympics turned into the hunger games and hence we should probably reconsider if they remain relevant in the current format or whether they should be reimagined. In my opinion,of course.
