Have you ever spent time by The Serpentine in Hyde Park? Whether people hiring pedalos on a summer afternoon or taking a stroll as autumn leaves fall, the area is frequented and loved by Londoners and visitors alike.
It is said that the lake’s flowing shape, with its careful balance of elegance and natural beauty, inspired many natural landscape designs across Britain.
My first memory of the Serpentine goes back to when I was 15, on my very first trip to London. I was studying English in Devon that summer, and our group came for a couple of days. After the Changing of the Guard and Parliament, our "responsible adults" left us in Hyde Park with a radius limited to Oxford Street, Mayfair and Knightsbridge.
It was the time before smartphones or Google Maps and as foreigners, we didn’t even know A–Zs existed to help us find our way. Which is why we ended up knowing the park inside out.
Years later, when I came to finish my architecture studies, we used to rollerblade around the lake on weekends.
These days, crossing the park by bike on the way to or from a building site gives me opportunities to see the Serpentine at different times of the year. And during ghe summer, the Serpentine Pavilion is a must stop, of course.
How about you? Any Serpentine memory you care to share🥰?
