Clapham Junction isn’t in Clapham
I did not either and the first time I needed to go to Clapham for a leaving party of a former colleague, pre Google maps, this information made me be late.
The thing is that despite the name, the famous station sits firmly in Battersea!!!!
When it opened in 1863, railway companies deliberately chose “Clapham Junction” to sound more respectable since Clapham was a desirable, leafy suburb, while Battersea was a place for factories and warehouses.
It was Victorian marketing at its best they attached a fashionable name to attract wealthier commuters. (Other examples include Victoria Street and King's cross)
More than 160 years later, it still confuses visitors as it remains one of the busiest railway stations in London.
