BT Tower
I find it surprising how modern the BT tower looks.
Built in the early 1960s for the General Post Office, it linked London to the rest of the UK through microwave signals, solving reception problems caused by new tall buildings.
Designed by Eric Bedford, its aerodynamic form made it both a feat of engineering and a Cold War communications hub.
At 177m, it was Britain’s tallest building when it opened in 1965 and includes public viewing floors and a revolving restaurant (that actually turned!).
Supported by 53‑metre‑deep foundations, the tower has survived blasts, blackouts, and the rise of the skyscrapers. In 2003, it earned a Grade II listing.
Now, after its 2024 sale to MCR Hotels, this classic landmark waits for its next chapter.
