I have always felt this wall (off Bricklane) is a perfect allegory of the way our minds are laid out.
Our mind is full of many, unrelated thoughts, facts, ideas, and projects, fighting for our attention, and yet there always seems to be room for more.
Growing up (even at uni) I was told I should focus on one thing, should learn about one topic, become a specialist in a discipline. I can't remember how many times I heard things such as "don't waste your time with that" or "you will never need to know that"
As an adult, in a world that has learned to understand the value of "growth mindset", "glocal" and many other concepts which confirm our minds can expand and we do not need to narrow our viewpoint, I am glad I never listened.
I used to think there may come a day in which "this or that" could come handy. Or even a day in which all the pieces of the puzzle would fall into place and something would click creating a lightbulb moment of some kind... these days, I am comfortable knowing that there is no need for purpose in continuous learning, there may never be a lightbulb moment and in fact, the ultimate link connecting all those dots may only be the box which contains them, where there is still room for more.
(for anyone familiar with the wall, I took this pic last spring, hence I am pretty certain that it looks completely different now )
