London's eye

Do you remember how excited we all were in October 1999 , when -after a year or so- the London Eye (or Millennium Wheel as it was called at the time) was about to be lifted?

I remember how enormous it looked when it was built horizontally on the Thames.

A structure that, we should remember, was designed as a temporary landmark to celebrate the arrival of the 21st century, and yet it became one of the top tourist attractions in London.

By October, its construction had become part of the daily lives of Londoners, who had grown accustomed to stop by and watch its construction from the Westminster bridge.

Then came the very very slow lift, the technical problems, the snapping of a cable , the critics, the adjustments, and the careful and even slower lifts which led to a later than planned opening and triggered the cynical side of the public.

And just like that, the very complex process (from concept to delivery) which had taken, one can only imagine, thousands of hours by the team (both at the design and delivery stages) became overshadowed by anecdotes and rumours ,as it often happens.

Every time I pass it I am reminded how important it for those of us working in the built environment to share the process of our work: The constraints, the lessons, the inspiration behind it. To connect with the purpose and shed a light on the technical aspects as well as those which are more visible.

And to do this in plain English and using mainstream channels rather than our industry press.

Only then people will feel part of the process and understand the complexity and impact of the built environment. And maybe then, with a bit of luck, value the work done by the many professionals who are building the world. leaving behind stereotypical views of our industry.

Many architects contribute with more than pretty pictures (I know I do) , not all engineers over specify, not every contractor is out to take advantage not every trades person is late, or rude... I am running out of characters but I hope I made a point.
