SERPENTINE PAVILION 2021

The Serpentine summer pavilion is one of the architectural events of the year in London.

Every year since the beginning of the millennium, an architectural studio who hasn't built in the UK is given the opportunity to do so in a temporary manner. They do so focusing on a topic they feel to be relevant.

Also every year, there is a long debate about the impact and relevance of the project. Well, I am happy to report that in 2021, Counterspace, a young South African female led studio has ripped up the rule book setting a precedent I hope others will follow.

There are many interesting things about this pavilion, and I would suggest you visit and find your own favourite...

The following are some I found of particular significance:

1. The architect, Sumayya Vally, has used history and research to root the project

2. By expanding the pavilion beyond the park, the architect has chosen to share the limelight with community projects doing great work and in doing so has amplified their voices.

3. The architecture is not prescribing how to use the space but creating a place that can be occupied and used in multiple ways

4. It uses simple lightweight materials to build an illusion which existence is temporary, and in doing so it limits waste and even pushes the laws of physics

I wonder, have you visited it yet? And if so, what stood out for you?
