Known for its streamline curves, green Crittall windows and a white facade, the former Daimler Car Hire Garage on Herbrand Street (Bloomsbury ) is one of central London's Art Deco examples.
Built in 1931 by Wallis Gilbert & Partners for Daimler Hire, this Grade II listed buildinb once housed luxury limousines services for elite clients, including Buckingham Palace.
Today its spiral ramp, ribbon windows and modern lines have been transformed into a global advertising agency. (And I have to admit that seeing pendant lamps in the ramp catches you by surprise)
London Built Environment has a lit more to offer than facades on the main roads. There are plenty of tucked‑away structures , including some that reflect the relationship of the city's with technology and transport, preserved for us to enjoy.
If you ever find yourself in Russell Square, as well as the Brunswick Centre, you could look up Herbrand Street and see this former garage (and if you are really interested, there are organised Bloomsbury walks to be found too if you look them up online.
