The Architectural Integrity of Our Digital Spaces
For a long time, I have used Instagram as a platform for reflection. It served as a digital journal where, among other things, I recorded the changing landscape of London & explored the built environment, art, and design. In the past three years, I have expanded to highlight what is lost when we prioritise other than human joy or the betterment of lives.
However, the structural design of that digital environment has continued to shift forcing me to reconsider where these discussions should take place:
1. The simulation of presence.
On December 30, 2025, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted Meta patent US 12513102B2. The title of the patent is "Simulation of a user of a social networking system using a language model." This document describes a system designed to "simulate a user when the user is absent from the social networking system," citing "when the user takes a long break or if the user is deceased" as primary use cases.
This technology enables a large language model to be retrained on an individual's historical posts, private messages (see point 2), and voice data to continue interacting with others as if the user were still present.
Although Meta stated in January 2026 that it has no immediate plans to launch this as a consumer feature, the legal and technical framework now exists to treat our historical posts and private messages as permanent, simulated platform inventory.
2. The removal of privacy.
Meta has officially confirmed in their Help Center that it will discontinue support for end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages on May 8, 2026 ,as reported widely in mainstream press.
This change removes the barriers that previously prevented the platform from accessing message content, effectively turning private professional dialogue into data that can be monitored, reviewed, and utilised for machine learning. It also sets key conditions for implementing point 1.
3. The automation of content.
Meta has signalled a definitive shift toward a fully automated ecosystem, prioritising its Andromeda and Lattice AI engines as the new standard for content delivery. These systems utilise predictive modelling to replace manual human discovery. Refer to point 1.
Design is an intentional act. It exists to serve the human experience. When the tools we use to discuss design prioritise the machine over the human, the integrity of the conversation is fully compromised.
This is why I am currently exploring where to move my publication to. I am looking for a dedicated space that respects data ownership and provides a quiet environment for deep reflection. I am conducting due diligence before committing to a platform that aligns with these values .
I realise this is a niche topic, but we cannot pretend it will go away. I am keen to know whether a human-centric digital space is possible in 2026.
